Has your dog suddenly become anxious and jumpy? Some dogs have a tendency to be more anxious than others, but sometimes they’ll become more anxious after stressful events. Even the most well-behaved dogs can experience anxiety if they’re not getting enough exercise or mental stimulation, don’t have a safe space to retreat when they feel overwhelmed or are constantly bombarded with new experiences.
Dogs Are Sensitive to Their Environment
Dogs are extremely sensitive to their environment and can feel anxious in new places. If your dog is nervous, he may bark or growl at other dogs or people, run away from you and hide under furniture, or pace back and forth while trembling with fear.
If you notice any of these signs in your dog—or if he’s acting out for no apparent reason—you may want to consult with your veterinarian, professional trainer and/or an animal behaviourist for advice.
Create a Safe Space
A crate or a room is the perfect place for your dog to go when they are anxious. Make sure it is comfortable and has everything your dog needs, like food, water and a bed.
Make sure that the room or crate is quiet and free of distractions. You can also put on music that is calming for both you and your dog during this time if it helps them relax even more!
Limit Activities
Dogs need to be kept busy, and if you have an anxious dog, it’s important that he has plenty of mentally stimulating enrichment so that he doesn’t get bored or overwhelmed. If your pup starts acting anxious, give him something else to focus on when they’re placed in situations that are normally overwhelming. This will help keep his mind off whatever is bothering him and make sure that he doesn’t become more stressed than necessary.
Feed Dog on a Schedule
Feeding your dog on a schedule will help to keep him calm. This is because the act of eating provides comfort and security for dogs, who are then less likely to get anxious or stressed out when they know that they are going to be fed at specific times throughout the day.
It’s also important not to overfeed your dog; if you give them too many treats or extra food during stressful situations (like when you’re taking them for a walk), this could lead them to become overweight or obese as well as cause digestive issues later down the line.
Your dog’s food can also be used in place of treats while training to avoid overfeeding or snacks that may cause some gastric upset. For more enrichment you can add your dogs meals into different puzzles or slow feeders, this also helps dogs eat slower aiding digestion.
Get Plenty of Exercise
If you have an anxious dog, exercise can help to calm them down. Exercise is good for dogs, and it helps them to relax and get rid of pent-up energy. When your dog has had a good run or walk, they will be much calmer when they come back inside the house. It also helps them bond with their owner as they enjoy spending time together.
